Process

Puppets and set parts are made with black construction paper cut with scissors and an exact-o knife. Each puppet is assembled with miniature paper joints for full range of movement and has slots built in for replaceable parts.
The animation is created from shadow puppets on an overhead projector projecting onto a blank wall. The projection is photographed as I animate frame by frame.

The animation uses two planes of glass in addition to the surface of the projector, which are secured a few inches apart to create 3 levels. This allows for a greater depth of composition. I experimented a lot with materials to achieve various textural effects.
For the installation, I built a dollhouse sized apartment building with holes cut out for the windows, using wood, paper, and paint.

Then I installed screens behind each of the windows and connected them to 2 raspberry pies programmed to play the videos on loop.
